KB856916 | HOW TO: Print Answer Sheets

This lesson details how to print Lightning Grader Answer sheets for all assessment types: Generic for On the Fly, or Manual/Hybrid Assessments. Answer sheets can also be printed pre-slugged or blank, or whether answer sheets have the student ID filled in or not.

Always continue to TEST your answer sheets before giving them to students!

Generic answer documents can be printed for the most common assessment you may give in the classroom. Typically, these answer sheets can be laminated for use in “On The Fly” assessments. Student answer documents can be scanned, graded, and saved as an assessment if desired or used for instant results to change or drive instruction on the fly.

How to Print Generic Answer Sheets

1. Click on the Assessments tab.

2. Under Scanning, select Print Answer Sheets.

For assessments that have particular answer settings or scanning options, you will want to print answer sheets from within the Assessment. This is great for assessments where the design uses a combination or variation of answer types. This is the best way to make the answer sheet match the test.

How to Print Answer Sheets from Within an Assessment

1. Click Assessments.

2. Under General, click View Assessments.

Once you're on the list of Assessments, click on the title of the assessment you want to print answer sheets for.

When your assessment opens, you will automatically be on the Overview tab.  If you have moved from here to visit other sub-tabs, simply return here by clicking the Overview tab.

1. From this menu, select Administration and Print Answer Sheets.

For assessments with multiple versions, you must print answer sheets from this location to print answer documents that will display the form numbers you need.

You may opt to print blank answer sheets (i.e., with no student names) and/or pre-slugged (i.e. with the student's name and student ID bubbled) answer sheets.  Simply click on the link that applies to your needs.

If you clicked the "Pre-Slugged" link you will need to tell the system which group of student names it should use.

1. Select from the options provided which Site, Session, Department, User, Course and Section you would like to use for your pre-slugged answer sheets.

2. Select Advanced Options to customize your answer sheets.  Please see Advanced Options for my Answer Sheet for more information.

3. Click on the Generate button to generate your answer sheet.  A status bar will appear displaying the number of student assessments being generated.

Once, generated, select Print or Download (If you want them in a PDF file).

You will need to have a Manual/Hybrid Assessment complete and available in Illuminate to print answer sheets from.

This is where you can customize your answer sheet by changing the layout, bubble sizes, spacing, header/footer, and print multiple sheets per page. Learning these options well will help you make answer sheets that fit your students needs. Using these options requires testing before hand and using the Print Preview feature to get a glimpse of what your sheet will look like.

Available Advanced Options

Flexible Sheet Layout allows you to customize your form if your assessment has Constructed Response or Number Grid question types.  The three layouts Lightning Grader offers are vertical, columns, and horizontal.  See below for a detailed view of each layout.

Vertical (default)

  • This option will apply unless changed.
  • Vertical layout, numbers questions top to bottom up to three columns if the assessment is strictly Multiple Choice, Number Grid questions.
  • Uses all three columns for constructed response questions.
  • If your assessment contains any Constructed Response type questions, it will list the questions in one column.
  • This option can create many pages if multiple Constructed response questions are on your assessment.

Below is an example of a vertically formatted sheet that contains Multiple choice, Number Grid, and Constructed Response. The assessment is 3 pages long.

Horizontal

  • Horizontal Layout, numbers questions left to right in 3 columns.
  • Uses all three columns for constructed response questions.
  • This option reduces the number of pages but can be confusing to follow for lower grade levels.

Below is an example of a horizontally formatted sheet that contains Multiple choice, Number Grid, and Constructed Response. The assessment is 2 pages long.

Columns

  • Column layout numbers questions top to bottom in 2 or 3 columns.
  • Does not care what question type is used, always formats question in columns.
  • Constructed response questions are one column wide.
  • Creates least amount of pages.
  • Very efficient layout.
  • Constructed response boxes are smaller.

Below are two examples of columns formatted sheets that contains Multiple choice, Number Grid, and Constructed Response. The assessments are both 1 page long. This is the option you want if you are looking to save paper or print multiple forms per page with constructed response items.

We can currently fit two answer documents per sheet depending on the number of questions, bubble size, question types, and sheet layout. For example, if your assessment has 50 questions and the bubbles size is set to small, then we can fit two forms per page.  If your assessment has 50 questions and the bubble size is set to large, then we will only fit one form per page.

Please use Print Preview to test the various layouts and bubble sizes for your sheets.  This is a quick way to play around with the options so that you can create the perfect answer sheet for your test.

Lightning Grader allows 5 different bubble sizes:

  1. Small is default and will generate at this size unless you have selected a different size.
  2. Medium is 30% larger than small.
  3. Large is 50% larger than small.
  4. XL or Extra Large is 40% larger than small.
  5. XXL or Double Extra Large is 65% larger than small.

If you always print larger bubbles, you will currently have to select large bubbles every time you generate a PDF. It does not save as a user setting.

  1. Group by class is defaulted to “Yes”.
  2. This means that it will print with the class information included in the header.
  3. It will also print multiple sheets for a student that is in multiple classes unless filtered correctly. Please make sure your filter is correct before printing. As always, please print a test sheet before printing the entire group.
